Google has banned 150 more dangerous apps from its app store Google Play Store. These 150 malicious SMS scam apps on the Play Store were part of a campaign called UltimaSMS. Google removes 150 malicious SMS apps from Google Play Store

The worrying thing about UltimaSMS scam campaign is that it is not limited to any country or topography. Rather it is spread among the most affected countries across the world with Android users in Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, United Arab Emirates, Turkey, Oman, Qatar, Kuwait, USA and Poland.

As Avast points out, when a user downloads these apps from the Google Play Store, the app checks their location, IMEI number and phone number to determine which country’s area code and country are prone to scams. language is to be used. Once the user opens the app, a screen is set up in their device’s local language to prompt them to enter their phone number.

Upon entering the requested details, users subscribe to premium SMS services that can charge upwards of $40 per month depending on the country and mobile user. Instead of unlocking the advertised features of the apps, these apps either display further SMS membership option or stop working completely. The sole purpose of fake apps is to trick users into signing up for premium SMS membership.

Avast has shared some tips to help users protect themselves from such SMS scams on these dangerous apps.

1. Disable premium SMS option with your carrier.

2. Whenever you download a new app, first of all read its review and rating.

3. Do not enter a phone number unless you trust the app.

4. Whenever you download an app, do so from the official app store – Google Play Store or Apple’s App Store.
