Many buyers and people who follow technological innovations have already heard about Nano Cell technology. This is a branded system that LG is proud of and installs in many mid-range and premium TV models. However, in recent years.
all the major players in this market have acquired their own matrices and their modifications: LG has Nano Cell, it also has OLED (Sony and Panasonic still use it), Samsung has QLED. All this variety of names can be misleading, so we propose to deal with the features of technologies and the real differences between them.
What is Nano Cell technology?
The Nano Cell screen technology is a proprietary system owned by LG and found only by that manufacturer. While the exact design of TVs is a secret, we know the main difference lies in the use of nanoparticles.
Another important design difference between Nano Cell and its outdated counterpart is the backlight. If in traditional models it is located along the edges of the display, then here the luminous components are located directly under the LEDs. This solution allows you to completely turn off the backlight in dark areas, providing deeper blacks. The technology eliminates the problem of lighted areas inherent in most conventional matrices.
At the same time, Nano Cell is still IPS to some extent, which means that wide viewing angles are preserved. Thus, the colors on the screen are bright, juicy, accurate and without distortion when viewed from any degree.
Pros and cons of LG TVs with Nano Cell
Let’s start with the benefits of Nano Cell technology:
low cost, and therefore lower price for the end user, when compared with OLED;
a large selection of diagonals, there are models from 40 “and up to 86”, but this is not the limit;
high maximum brightness;
excellent color reproduction, aided by filtering out dull tones for increased contrast and more expressive colors;
provides deep blacks;
wide viewing angles without distortion;
Nano Cell burn-in is not typical, at least not more than with other technologies;
has support for popular and useful technologies for displaying HDR content and its modifications;
there is Dolby Vision;
pre-installed automatic color calibration;
works with the use of artificial intelligence, which helps to achieve better detail;
automatic selection of modes for the type of content being played.
The Nano Cell is a decent value for money technology, but it’s not perfect. To understand its real pros and cons can only be based on a comparison with competing OLED and QLED systems. That is exactly what we will do.
Brightness and Contrast
Brightness is an important parameter when playing a picture, and QLED is proud of it. Although Nano Cell, OLED are able to provide a comfortable level of brightness, QLED still bypasses them. LG deliberately doesn’t list this option, most websites and stores just list it as “Ultra Brightness”. When measuring Nano Cell with the help of special instruments, it is possible to obtain 300-400 nits. In QLED, this figure reaches 3000-4000 nits, but usually 1500 nits.
In terms of contrast, you can arrange technologies in the following order in descending order: OLED, QLED and Nano Cell.
Today, OLED and QLED are already able to cover the DCI-P3 color space by 100%. At the same time Nano Cell can render 99% of colors from DCI-P3. All indicators are decent, although Nano Cell loses a little to its competitors.
When it comes to black depth, the best technology is still the more expensive OLED. It can completely turn off the backlight under specific pixels, creating perfect blacks. Nano Cell is in second place, it also offers sufficient depth, but this system cannot turn off the backlight under each point. QLED is in the last position here.
OLED and Nano Cell have maximum viewing angles up to 178°. At the same time, QLED is inferior to competitors, offering a comfortable 140 ° (approximately).
Here is the most important thing. Nano Cell, although inferior to competitors in some respects, is much cheaper. For example, if an OLED TV with a diagonal of 55 inches will cost about 150,000 rubles, then Nano Cell can be bought for 80,000 rubles. It is more appropriate to compare it with QLED, TVs based on this technology can be both cheaper and much more expensive.
