WhatsApp Privacy Update: Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has made a big announcement regarding WhatsApp. He said in his Facebook post on Friday, “We are adding another layer of privacy and security to WhatsApp. It is an end-to-end encryption option for backups that people can choose to store in Google Drive or iCloud.”

Mark Zuckerberg said, “WhatsApp is the first global messaging service of this scale to offer end-to-end encrypted messaging and backups, it was a really difficult technical challenge to overcome. This required a completely new framework for key storage and cloud storage in the operating system.”

Will come as an optional feature
The new feature of WhatsApp will be released as an optional feature and will be rolled out for the instant messaging platform iOS and Android users in the coming weeks.

What is the arrangement now?
Currently, WhatsApp’s backup management relies on Apple iCloud or Google Drive to store backups of WhatsApp data (chat messages, photos, etc.). Now, WhatsApp will provide the ability to secure backups with end-to-end encryption before they are uploaded to cloud services.

With the introduction of end-to-end encrypted backups, WhatsApp has created an HSM (Hardware Security Module) based ‘Backup Key Vault’, which provides per-user encryption for user backups in tamper-resistant storage. Stores the key (Backup Key Vault) securely.
